Shuowen “Echo” Shen is a director, dramaturg, and MFA candidate in Dramaturgy at Columbia University. Her work spans artistic and literary development across theater, film, publishing and curatorial practice. Deeply interested in how performance constructs space and time, she focuses on experimental, site-specific, and documentary theater that explores East Asian diasporic narratives and the intersections of memory, language, and place.
Her dramaturgical research engages post-dramatic projects rooted in oral storytelling, movement, and ethnographic inquiry, often investigating how collective memory takes form through embodied experience. Recent projects include her debut as writer-director with About Past Lives, Packing Tips, and Black Cats; co-director of the North American premiere of Wei Yu-Chia’s A Fable for Now; and serving as a dramaturg for BAKKHAI, Electric World.
She holds a BA with honors in East Asian Studies and Theater, with a certificate in Social, Cultural, and Critical Theory from Wesleyan University.
