The piece is a compilation of archival TV footage showing celebrated Indian sitarist Ravi Shankar’s concerts in Paris in the 1950s and 60s—a time of decolonial politics and Western fascination with Indian music. Mixing-up and reworking footage and sound, I want to show the attitudes and music making of this particular historical moment. ------------- To visit, please RSVP at least 24 hours before the event. We will coordinate your entry through the main campus entrance (3009 Broadway). Visitors with Barnard/Columbia IDs have automatic campus access and can walk in. Image Krishan Rai is a composer and musician based in New York, studying with Amy Beth Kirsten at the Juilliard School. His works have been played by ensembles including Warp Trio, Quartetto Goldberg, the Valencia Contemporary Ensemble, Associazione Ex. Novo, Triple Helix, and the Bergamot Quartet.
